Nigeria's Weightlifters Lead Medal Tally at Glasgow 2026

At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria has achieved notable success, primarily through weightlifters and para-powerlifters, who have contributed to the majority of the country's medal tally. As of now, Nigeria has won a total of 12 medals: six gold, four silver, and two bronze, placing the country fifth overall and the highest-ranked African nation.

Of these, 10 medals have come from weightlifting and para powerlifting. Key achievements include gold medals won by Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Riluwan Idris in para powerlifting, while Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema, and Rita Ferdinand secured silver in the same category.

In weightlifting, Edidiong Umoafia, Onome Didih, and Rafiatu Lawal won gold, with Umoafia setting a Commonwealth Games record in the men’s 71kg category. Athletics saw its first medals on Tuesday with Kayinsola Ajayi and Temitope Adeshina winning bronze in the men’s 100m and women’s high jump, respectively.

However, Nigeria's boxing team has struggled, with five out of six boxers eliminated, including Patricia Mbata.
