Nigeria's Dr. Okoye Aims to Transform Healthcare System

Dr. Richard Okoye, founder of Save-A-Life Mission Hospital in Port Harcourt, stated that Nigeria can reverse its trend of medical tourism and improve its low life expectancy through sustained investment in technology and local healthcare capacity. He expressed concerns about the deteriorating doctor-to-patient ratio, especially in rural areas, where access to healthcare is limited.

Okoye began his intervention in 2014, developing technology to embed international medical standards into healthcare delivery. Work on this technology started in the United States in 2016 and has evolved into a digital healthcare ecosystem at his hospital and in underserved communities.

The hospital employs real-time monitoring, electronic medical records, and AI-assisted clinical decision support. Okoye plans to introduce an advanced ambulance system in Nigeria in October.

He also mentioned adapting technology for rural communities facing electricity and internet challenges, utilizing solar-powered systems and satellite connectivity for remote monitoring of patients.
