West Ham Relegation Could Cost London Taxpayers £2.5M

London Mayor Sadiq Khan warned that West Ham United's relegation from the Premier League could result in a £2.5 million annual loss for taxpayers. This financial impact stems from the club's lease agreement for the London Stadium, where they currently pay £4.4 million in annual rent.

West Ham is currently positioned 18th in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone, with crucial matches remaining, including a game against Chelsea. Khan criticized former Mayor Boris Johnson for agreeing to what he termed "the worst deal imaginable" in 2012, which has led to a significant decline in commercial revenue from the stadium.

If relegated, West Ham would play in the Championship, which would further reduce income and increase operational costs, including stewarding for the 23 home games compared to 19 in the Premier League.
