France Seeks Mike Adenuga's Support for Cultural Institute

France is in negotiations with Nigerian billionaire Mike Adenuga to finance a new Institut Français in Abuja, with President Emmanuel Macron anticipated to personally lay the foundation stone during a state visit later this year. This initiative follows Adenuga's previous funding of the Mike Adenuga Centre in Ikoyi, which houses the Alliance Française Lagos.

France seeks to enhance its cultural presence in Nigeria amid budget constraints and evolving foreign policy challenges. Adenuga's longstanding relationship with France is underscored by his 2018 recognition as Commander of the French Legion of Honour and his business ties with French firms such as Eutelsat, Nokia Alcatel-Lucent, and TotalEnergies.

Macron reportedly maintains a personal connection with Adenuga, calling him on his birthday. The negotiations indicate a shift in Western diplomacy, favoring partnerships with influential local figures to expedite cultural initiatives without bureaucratic delays.

Reports suggest Adenuga is close to accepting the proposal, with Macron planning to proceed with the ceremony regardless of the final funding structure.
