Police Declares Non-Responsibility for Roaming Cattle in Abuja

On September 3, the Nigeria Police Force clarified its position regarding the issue of roaming cattle in Abuja, stating that controlling animals is not part of its constitutional mandate. Police spokesperson Ani Iniedu explained that police intervention would only occur if the cattle were involved in offenses such as trespassing or property damage.

He emphasized that the responsibility for animal control lies with the relevant Ministry or Department of Environment. Residents must formally report incidents involving roaming cattle for police investigations to commence.

The police will not actively search for wandering cattle. This clarification comes amid rising concerns from residents and motorists about the presence of cattle in busy areas of Abuja, including major roads and near the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, raising issues of public safety and traffic management.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike acknowledged the administration's capacity to address the issue but refrained from discussing it further, citing national security concerns.
