Regina Chukwu on Choosing Yoruba Movies Over English Nollywood

Regina Chukwu, a Nollywood actress, revealed her reasons for choosing the Yoruba movie industry over the English-language sector during an interview on Oyinmomo TV. She alleged that while attempting to break into the mainstream film industry, she encountered a “sex-for-roles” culture, which discouraged her from continuing in the English-language sector.

Regina claimed that aspiring actors often faced inappropriate demands for roles, including being lured into compromising situations with fake movie scripts. Despite being of Igbo origin, she embraced Yoruba-language productions due to her upbringing in the South-West, which made it easier for her to relate to the Yoruba culture.

Regina noted that the Yoruba film industry provided a more accommodating environment, allowing her to establish herself as an actress. Although she has enjoyed success in Yoruba movies, she acknowledged that her choice has limited her visibility in the South-East, where she remains relatively unknown compared to her recognition in Lagos and other South-West states.
