Tinubu Orders EFCC to Unfreeze Osun State Accounts

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu explained his directive to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to unfreeze the Osun State Government’s bank accounts, following a court order obtained on August 5, 2026. He expressed embarrassment over the timing of the EFCC's action, which he believed could create an impression of federal interference in the upcoming governorship election scheduled for August 15.

Tinubu emphasized that he was not questioning the EFCC's independence or its legal authority but was compelled to intervene due to the potential implications for public confidence in Nigeria's democratic process. He reiterated his commitment to allowing anti-corruption agencies to operate without political interference since taking office.

To preserve the integrity of the electoral process, he directed the EFCC to return to court and vacate the order freezing the accounts, stating that nothing should suggest that federal agencies are being used to influence election outcomes.
