Scientists Uncover Why Mosquitoes Prefer Certain People

Research has revealed that mosquitoes are drawn to certain individuals due to specific biological cues. The primary attractant is carbon dioxide, which mosquitoes can detect from up to a dozen meters away.

As they approach, body odor, heat, and moisture become stronger signals that help them lock onto their targets. Female mosquitoes are particularly sensitive to these cues, with studies estimating that they respond to around 300 to 1,000 different odor compounds.

Recent studies have identified 27 compounds that mosquitoes actively respond to when choosing their targets. Individuals who produce higher levels of a compound formed when skin breaks down its natural oil, called sebum, are more likely to be bitten.

Additionally, pregnant women in their second trimester show a strong preference among mosquitoes due to changes in body temperature and metabolic activity. Contrary to popular belief, there is no scientific backing for the theory that mosquitoes prefer certain blood types.
