Nigeria's Solar Dialogue Advocates Phased Import Ban

The Kano Solar Dialogue 2026, held at the Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainability Transition (CREST) at Bayero University Kano, was jointly organized by CREST and the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP). The event focused on Nigeria's solar energy sector and the Federal Government's proposed policy to restrict solar panel imports.

Dr. Michael Terungwa David, Executive Director of GIFSEP, described Nigeria's paradox of abundant energy resources and widespread energy poverty.

He noted that millions of Nigerians face unreliable electricity, relying on costly generators. While acknowledging the growth in solar energy adoption, he cautioned against an immediate blanket ban on solar panel imports, arguing it could slow renewable energy adoption and increase costs.

Dr. David advocated for a phased industrialization strategy that would enhance renewable energy access while developing local manufacturing capabilities.

He recommended government policies that prioritize local manufacturing incentives, affordable financing, technical training, and gradual import substitution.
