Jemiriye on Nigerian Artistes' BET Awards Setback

The 2026 BET Awards saw leading Nigerian artistes, including Tems, Wizkid, Asake, and Burna Boy, nominated but ultimately failing to secure any awards. This outcome has reignited discussions about the significance of international recognition for Afrobeats.

Jemiriye, a Nigerian musician, urged that the worth of Nigerian music should not be tied to foreign accolades. She stated that the journey of an artist transcends trophies and that the global rise of Afrobeats is evidence of its cultural and commercial influence.

Jemiriye pointed out that 26 percent of Spotify’s global streaming volume is driven by Afrobeats, asserting that African music has evolved into a major force in the international music economy. She criticized the existing international award structures for inadequately reflecting Africa's musical contributions and emphasized that the significance of Afrobeats extends beyond awards, advocating for greater investment in Africa's music institutions.
