In South Africa's technology sector, employers are increasingly valuing practical skills over formal university degrees, as evidenced by a graduate unemployment rate of 12.4% and a shortage of qualified developers. Amogelang Chaane, who secured a position at Amazon Web Services (AWS), illustrates this trend.

While studying at Richfield, he developed a full-stack application and gained experience through internships, hackathons, and personal projects, demonstrating his capabilities beyond academic qualifications. Chaane emphasized the importance of building a portfolio and gaining real-world experience to stand out to employers.

This shift in focus highlights the growing disconnect between traditional education and the skills needed in the tech industry, as many graduates lack the ability to contribute effectively from day one. Dineo Maakamedi, a first-year BSc Information Technology student, is also navigating this evolving landscape as she begins her journey in tech.
