Obanikoro Explains Tinubu's Lagos Defeat in 2023 Election

Musiliu Obanikoro, a former Minister of State for Defence, revealed the reasons behind Bola Tinubu's defeat in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election. He stated that the Muslim-Muslim ticket adopted by the All Progressives Congress (APC), which featured Tinubu and his running mate Kashim Shettima, created apprehension among Christian voters.

This apprehension stemmed from fears about how a presidency led by Tinubu, a Muslim, would address Christian concerns in Nigeria. Obanikoro noted that this situation contributed to the surprising defeat of Tinubu in Lagos, a political stronghold, where he lost to Labour Party candidate Peter Obi.

This marked the first time a former Lagos governor lost a presidential election in the state. Despite this loss, Tinubu went on to win the presidential election nationwide and was sworn in as Nigeria's president on May 29, 2023.
