Wike Opposes Fubara's Second-Term Bid in Rivers State

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, articulated his camp's opposition to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara's second-term bid during a media chat on August 4, 2026. Wike indicated that survival and political relevance were key factors in this decision.

He recalled a previous agreement to move past their differences but noted that new political concerns emerged, prompting his allies to fear losing influence in Rivers State. Wike stated, “There was a time we all agreed to let bygones be bygones, but something fundamental came up in politics.” He also alleged that external forces were trying to take control of Rivers State, which he described as a significant political and economic asset.

The ongoing political dispute between Wike and Fubara, who succeeded Wike after the 2023 governorship election, has led to a major political crisis, causing divisions among lawmakers and political actors aligned with both factions.
