Army Colonel Ma’aji Explains Coup Plot Against Tinubu

Nigerian Army Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji has been accused of involvement in an alleged plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu. In a statement released on Monday, Ma’aji expressed that his actions were motivated by patriotism and frustration regarding the deteriorating conditions in Nigeria, including poor governance, insecurity, and inadequate welfare for military personnel.

He apologized for his involvement, asserting that his intentions were not driven by personal ambition but rather a desire for a better Nigeria. Ma’aji indicated that the alleged plot was still in the mobilization and discussion phase when security authorities intervened, and he denied any foreign collaboration.

He mentioned that frustrations over his failure to secure promotion to brigadier-general contributed to the situation. Following his arrest, Ma’aji recognized the need for alternative ways to express concerns within the military and called for improved welfare packages and a formal communication channel for military personnel to address their issues directly with the Chief of Army Staff.
