EFCC Visits Uyo Teaching Hospital Amid Fraud Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a visit to Uyo Teaching Hospital to authenticate a medical report related to a suspect accused of defrauding multiple microfinance banks, including the University of Uyo Microfinance Bank. EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale explained that the agency required the hospital to verify the authenticity of the medical report as directed by Justice M.

Onyetunu of the Federal High Court in Uyo. The EFCC had previously sent two letters to the hospital management on March 11, 2026, and April 20, 2026, but received no response.

Consequently, the EFCC's operations team visited the hospital on a Tuesday to inquire about the status of their request. However, they faced hostility from the hospital staff, who allegedly pelted them with stones and other dangerous objects.

The Chief Medical Director reportedly ordered the hospital gates to be locked, preventing the EFCC from exiting peacefully. The police advised the CMD to open the gates to allow the EFCC to leave without further incident.
