Wike-Backed PDP Strengthens Control Ahead of Convention

The faction of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Nyesom Wike is consolidating its control in anticipation of the national convention set for March 29, 2024. This follows state congresses held on Tuesday across several states, including Plateau and Lagos.

In Plateau State, Tongshep emerged as the new state chairman alongside 38 executive members during a congress supervised by a seven-member delegation. The event was described as peaceful and orderly by the newly elected PDP spokesman, Samaila Rukuba.

Meanwhile, in Lagos State, Muka Popoola was elected as the new chairman, with a consensus approach adopted to strengthen party unity. The congress produced a 39-member state executive committee.

However, the rival faction led by Choji Dalyop dismissed these elections as baseless. Additionally, Governor Timothi Golu announced the dismissal of six appointees, including former House Assembly member Johnbul Shekarau, as part of the ongoing political maneuvering within the party.
