Wike Calls for PDP Overhaul, Dismisses 2027 Ambitions

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, addressed the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) aspirations for the 2027 presidential election during a project inspection in Abuja on Thursday. He characterized the party's presidential ambitions as premature and unrealistic, particularly in light of its recent electoral failures, notably in Anambra State.

Wike responded to criticisms from former Anambra PDP chairman Dan Ulasi and other party chieftains, emphasizing that the party's current structure is inadequate for a credible presidential campaign. He pointed out that even unnamed presidential aspirants privately acknowledge the challenges of winning elections given the party's internal fractures.

Wike insisted that the PDP must first resolve its structural issues at the ward and local government levels before attempting to mount a successful campaign. He warned that success in Rivers State should not be assumed to be replicable elsewhere without significant changes within the party.
