Wike Inaugurates New FCT Area Council Chairmen

On Monday, Nyesom Wike inaugurated the newly elected chairmen of the FCT area councils in Abuja, following the council polls held in February. He congratulated the new leaders, marking the beginning of a significant era in grassroots leadership.

Wike warned the chairmen that their real work starts now and reminded them of their solemn covenant with the electorate, emphasizing that public office should not be treated as mere titles. He announced strict fiscal monitoring of local government funds and stressed that no executive chairman is authorized to sign cheques without oversight.

Wike expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing strike by the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) affecting primary school teachers and urged the new chairmen to find permanent solutions to labor disputes. He also ordered an immediate halt to practices that abandon the Abuja Municipal Area Council's responsibilities and announced rewards for councils that excel in providing basic infrastructure.
