Wike Partners with Japan to Revamp Abuja Master Plan

On Tuesday, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), announced a partnership with Japan to update the Abuja master plan, which was originally established in 1979. This initiative aims to align the city’s growth with modern realities by the year 2050.

The announcement followed a visit from a Japanese delegation led by Ambassador Suzuki Hideo and JICA's Chief Representative Ishigam Keiji. Wike expressed appreciation for Japan's contributions to Nigeria, noting that Japanese experts designed Abuja's original blueprint and that there is a need to reassess and further develop it.

He highlighted Japan's support in various sectors, including education and healthcare, and mentioned a scheduled handover ceremony for a pilot plastic collection facility on March 26th. Ishigam Keiji emphasized JICA's readiness to prioritize infrastructure development to achieve visible and rapid results in upgrading the master plan to meet Abuja's needs by 2050.
