Wike Vows Active Role in 2027 Race, Rejects Atiku's Path

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says he will remain a political force ahead of 2027, dismissing suggestions he will stand aside for former VP Atiku Abubakar.

Nyesom Wike, Nigeria's Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has signalled his intention to remain engaged in the 2027 presidential election landscape, firmly rejecting any notion that he will withdraw from political competition. At his monthly media gathering held in Rivers State on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Wike declared he will not remain idle as other political figures pursue their ambitions.

The former Rivers State governor made specific reference to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, asserting he will not permit an unopposed electoral path for that candidate. Wike's comments emerged while addressing questions about his repeated journeys back to Rivers State, which observers had variously interpreted as suggesting a potential departure from his Abuja-based ministerial responsibilities.

He clarified that such visits serve a deliberate political purpose: monitoring developments and engaging directly with constituents throughout his home state. Wike pushed back against rumours suggesting his frequent trips signal an intention to relocate permanently away from the federal capital, instead emphasising that maintaining active contact with Rivers State proves essential to his political strategy.

He framed his engagement with the state as necessary groundwork heading toward the elections, arguing against the notion that he could operate successfully from Abuja alone without firsthand interaction with political actors on the ground. The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has since disputed Wike's political posturing.

Via Theo Abu Agada, its Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, the party cautioned him against assuming he possesses the capacity to determine or deliver electoral results in either Rivers State or the FCT in support of President Bola Tinubu. The NDC's statement implies that opposition forces will contest Wike's assertions regarding his electoral influence.
