Train Accident Near Asham, Kaduna: Injuries Reported

On October 16, 2023, at approximately 10:30 AM, a train accident occurred near Asham, Kaduna, involving the rear locomotive and a passenger coach. Eyewitness accounts describe a loud bang and a jolt that caused passengers to be thrown from their seats, resulting in various injuries, including head injuries and fractures.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), managed by Dr. Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the incident and activated emergency response protocols.

The train, which had departed Rigasa Railway Station and was en route to Idu Station, arrived at Idu at 10:39 AM, 38 minutes behind schedule. NRC clarified that the train did not derail, contrary to media reports, and that the rear locomotive detached and rolled forward without leaving the track.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, led by Mr. Funk Arowojob, commenced an investigation into the incident, which took place along a downward gradient.

Health workers were on standby at Kugawa Station to provide medical assistance.
