Federal Worker Forum Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Wages

The Federal Worker Forum has issued a threat for an indefinite nationwide strike in response to ongoing insecurity and unresolved wage issues in Nigeria. In a communiqué released after an online meeting on Saturday, the forum criticized the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress for not providing adequate leadership.

The communiqué, signed by the national coordinator, Emeliez Ayo Ogundel, accused the federal government of exploiting workers and failing to guarantee their safety. An online poll indicated overwhelming support among members for immediate strike action.

The forum rejected the proposed N100,000 minimum wage by the Nigerian Governor Forum, labeling it a conspiracy to keep wages low. They demand a living wage and the clearance of outstanding arrears, including two months of wage award arrears from July 2024.

The forum also condemned recent kidnappings in Oyo and Borno states, particularly involving children and teachers, and called for the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to engage with the government for a swift resolution to these issues.
