World Bank Calls for Action on Nigeria's Early Childhood Development

The World Bank has called for unified government action across various sectors and tiers to strengthen early childhood development in Nigeria. Dr. Ritgak Tilley-Gyado, the World Bank Task Team Leader for Early Childhood, made this appeal during a consultation workshop with Civil Society Organisations and the media, part of the World Bank’s Early Childhood Development Inception Mission.

With approximately 38 million children under five in Nigeria, Tilley-Gyado stressed the urgency of coordinated efforts. She highlighted that investments in healthcare, nutrition, responsive caregiving, and early learning are crucial for enhancing children's educational outcomes and future contributions to national productivity.

Tilley-Gyado advocated for an all-of-society approach involving governments, development partners, civil society, and communities. Dr. Gloria Ahmed, National Coordinator of the Open Government Partnership, echoed this sentiment, framing early childhood development as a vital investment in Nigeria’s human capital and future prosperity, necessitating evidence-based planning and transparent monitoring.
