Nigeria Rejoins World Energy Council to Boost Energy Sector

Nigeria's return to the World Energy Council (WEC) is marked by the formal announcement of a new National Member Committee and Governing Board on August 6, 2026. President Ahmed Tinubu congratulated the initiative, which aims to enhance Nigeria's influence in international energy policy while attracting global expertise and investment into its domestic energy sector.

The WEC platform is crucial for Nigeria as it seeks to tackle the "Energy Trilemma," which includes achieving energy security, equity, and environmental sustainability. These interconnected challenges highlight the need for a robust energy system that supports economic transformation.

Nigeria's membership allows it to engage with 90 other countries on energy issues, representing its vast natural gas reserves and the 80 million Nigerians lacking access to electricity. This membership positions Nigeria to contribute its unique data and solutions to global energy discussions.
