Nigeria Joins International Energy Agency as Association Country

On July 9, 2026, Nigeria was officially admitted as an Association Country by the International Energy Agency (IEA), a decision welcomed by IEA Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol.

This admission is noted as the fastest in the agency's 52-year history and reflects Nigeria's strategic importance as a credible global energy partner. The IEA currently comprises 32 member countries and 13 association countries, representing approximately 75% of global energy demand.

Nigeria's new status will deepen cooperation, enhance policy dialogue, and support the country's priorities in energy access and sustainable energy security. The Nigerian government expressed appreciation for the IEA's support in achieving this milestone and plans to formalize cooperation through a joint work program.

A visit by Dr. Birol to Abuja is anticipated to commemorate Nigeria's admission and further establish a comprehensive framework for future collaboration.
