Yobe State Begins Candidate Screening for LG Elections

The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission, led by Executive Chairman Dr Ibrahim Yabani, has commenced the screening of candidates for chairmanship, vice-chairmanship, and councillorship positions in preparation for local government elections set for September 26, 2026. The screening process will take place from September 1 to 7, 2026, across three designated zones: Zone A in Damaturu, Zone B in Potiskum, and Zone C covering Bade and Nguru Local Government Areas.

Candidates for chairmanship and vice-chairmanship will be screened at the SIEC headquarters in Damaturu. Dr Yabani emphasized that the screening adheres strictly to constitutional provisions, referencing the qualifications outlined in the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Political parties are scheduled to begin their campaigns from September 18 to 25, 2026. Additionally, electoral officers across the state’s 17 local government areas have been trained to manage the electoral process effectively, with election materials set to be deployed on September 24, 2026.
