ADC Defends Congresses Against INEC Chairman's Claims

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has responded sharply to comments made by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, regarding the party's planned congresses.

In a statement issued on Friday, ADC accused INEC of misinterpreting a court appeal and warned the commission against overstepping its constitutional mandate. The party emphasized that ongoing legal disputes within its ranks do not invalidate its right to conduct congresses, asserting that no court order explicitly bars such activities.

ADC maintained that its internal processes are in line with the party constitution and the Electoral Act, and that INEC's role should be limited to monitoring party activities once properly notified. The ADC further argued that comparisons to previous electoral crises, such as the Zamfara political situation, are flawed, as their case does not involve a breach of electoral procedures.

The party urged INEC to remain neutral and restrict its actions to its statutory responsibilities.
