INEC Chair Assures Nigerians Votes Will Count in 2027

On a courtesy visit to General Abdulsalam Abubakar, former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), assured Nigerians that their votes will count in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

This visit took place at Abubakar's residence in Minna, Niger State, on Friday. Amupitan, accompanied by a delegation of National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors, and technical aides, commended Abubakar as “the father of democracy in Nigeria” for his role in the transition to civilian rule in 1999.

He highlighted the importance of the National Peace Committee's Peace Accord initiative in promoting non-violence among political actors. Amupitan confirmed that the Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will occur on February 6, 2027.

Abubakar urged Nigerians to support INEC in the lead-up to these elections.
