Presidency Denies Amaechi's Tax Law Claims Ahead of Elections

The Nigerian presidency has strongly rejected claims made by former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi regarding a new tax law that he alleged would be enforced before the next general elections. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga described Amaechi's comments as false and misleading.

In a video circulating online, Amaechi warned that the new tax policy would negatively affect businesses and daily life, suggesting it would be implemented shortly before the elections scheduled for January and February next year. Onanuga dismissed these claims, stating that there is no such policy and accused Amaechi of spreading egregious lies.

He further questioned why the policy had not been introduced before the elections, implying that the delay was to avoid public backlash. Onanuga urged Nigerians to take the electoral process seriously, emphasizing that the alleged tax law would impact families and future incomes.

He characterized Amaechi's statements as blatant falsehoods linked to political campaigning for the 2027 elections.
