Youth-led MSMEs in Sub-Saharan Africa Face Digital Crisis

A study conducted by Dr. Imoleayo Foyek Obigbemi from the University of Lagos, in collaboration with the University of Nairobi and the University of Witwatersrand, reveals that youth-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across Sub-Saharan Africa are facing a digital maturity crisis.

The research, presented at a stakeholder engagement event hosted by the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre, indicates that the digital maturity levels of these enterprises are significantly lower than expected, especially within the health and energy sectors. The study highlights that MSMEs account for 80% of African businesses and contribute approximately 50% to the continent's GDP.
