Zamfara Governor Hosts Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle to Boost Sports Development

Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal welcomed Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to the Government House in Gusau on January 28, 2026, aiming to enhance sports development and youth engagement across the state. The meeting focused on strategies to strengthen grassroots sports and create opportunities for young athletes.

Governor Lawal praised Chelle's contributions to Nigerian football and discussed plans to leverage the Sardauna Memorial Stadium in Gusau, currently undergoing reconstruction, as a central hub for sports activities in the state. Chelle, who signed a two-year contract in January 2025, guided Nigeria to a bronze medal finish in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, enhancing the country's football reputation.

The Nigerian Football Federation is reportedly in talks with Chelle regarding a possible contract extension, amidst interest from other countries like Tunisia, Algeria, Angola, and Gabon. Concerns within the NFF have been raised about Chelle's limited presence in Nigeria, with criticism of his absence from domestic matches and the need to identify local talent.
