Study Reveals Cholera Cases in Zamfara's LGAs

A recent study conducted by the Federal University Gusau identified active cholera cases in five local government areas of Zamfara State, as reported on Friday following the release of the research report. The research team, led by Oluchukwu Abba, collected 142 water samples from various sources, including tap water, boreholes, rivers, wells, and sachet water.
The findings indicated poor sanitation and a heavy reliance on unsafe water sources, with 79.2% of residents across the state depending on these sources. Active cholera cases were identified in Gusau, Bungudu, Zurmi, Shinkafi, and Talata Mafara, with Talata Mafara recording the highest positive cholera rate of 34.48%.
Microbiologist Rosemari Okoy, from N. Sani University, stated that the research commenced immediately following a cholera outbreak in Zamfara to help prevent future cases.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Tukur Adamu, underscored the need for continued scientific research and community support programs to address the recurring cholera outbreaks in Nigeria.
