Akwaowo Revamps ICCON to Enhance Chemical Regulation

Akwaowo Idongesit Reuben, who assumed office as acting Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON) 100 days ago, is focused on revitalizing the 33-year-old regulatory body. He aims to improve ICCON's visibility and internal administration while addressing an identity gap that has hindered public understanding of its roles and responsibilities.

Established by Decree 91 of 1993, ICCON is tasked with regulating chemistry education and practice, intersecting with public health and national security. Akwaowo noted that ICCON recently participated in reviewing chemical regulations with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and is collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) on issuing End User Certificates to chemical companies.

In his first 100 days, he has resolved a long-standing staff promotion issue and initiated payments for outstanding transfer entitlements owed to staff.
