Eleven States at High Risk for Meningitis Outbreaks

A public health advisory issued by NIMET on Thursday has identified eleven Nigerian states as high-risk for meningitis outbreaks. The states listed include Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno.

The advisory warns that the disease, caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, can progress rapidly and become life-threatening if not treated quickly, with symptoms such as sudden high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. NIMET urges residents in these states to be vigilant for early symptoms and seek immediate medical attention.

The advisory highlights that children, young adults, and individuals living in overcrowded conditions or with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Preventive measures recommended include vaccination, improved hygiene practices, and avoiding overcrowded places.

NIMET emphasizes the importance of community support for public health awareness efforts to help reduce the spread of the disease.
