NCDC Warns of Cerebrospinal Meningitis Outbreak Risk

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has issued a public health advisory concerning an ongoing risk of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in Nigeria, particularly in states within the African meningitis belt. This advisory comes as Nigeria experiences its peak dry season, which typically runs from December to April, a period when the disease is more prevalent due to dry, dusty conditions that contribute to overcrowding and poor ventilation, increasing the risk of transmission.

The NCDC urges Nigerians to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures, as surveillance and response activities are ongoing nationwide. Laboratory testing is being conducted at the state level to strengthen national laboratory capacity.

CSM is a serious infection affecting the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, commonly caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium. If untreated, the disease can progress rapidly and become fatal within hours.

Early diagnosis and prompt antibiotic treatment significantly improve survival rates and reduce complications.
