NIMET Warns of Meningitis Outbreak Risk in Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has issued a warning regarding an impending meningitis outbreak, particularly affecting residents in northern states such as Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno. NIMET categorized these states as having the highest risk levels for cerebrospinal meningitis, urging the public to exercise vigilance.

The agency highlighted that children, young adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Symptoms to watch for include sudden high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light.

NIMET emphasized the importance of vaccination, good hygiene practices, and early medical care, especially in primary health centers. The warning comes as Nigeria typically experiences meningitis outbreaks during the transition from dry to rainy seasons.

The agency noted that the recent heat wave and poor sanitation conditions exacerbate the risk, calling for urgent public enlightenment campaigns and collaboration among federal and state authorities to combat this health challenge.
