Makurdi Communities Flooded After 12-Hour Rainfall

On September 29, 2026, several communities in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, were flooded following a 12-hour downpour that began on Sunday night and continued into Monday. The rainfall submerged houses and streets in areas including Achusa, Rice Mill in Wadata, Idye, and Naka Road.

The flooding was reportedly worsened by ongoing road construction and uncompleted drainage channels, which overflowed into nearby communities. A resident of Achusa, identified as Debby, reported that the rainfall, although not extremely heavy, significantly affected several houses in the community.

She commended the state governor, Hyacinth Alia, for addressing perennial flooding through ongoing construction and drainage projects but urged the government to instruct construction companies to unblock drainage channels to facilitate water flow. Tema Ager, the Information Officer of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the report of flooding in Achusa but noted that the agency had not yet conducted an assessment of the area.
