Flooding in Benue Submerges Homes, Leaves Many Homeless

Achusa Community in Makurdi, Benue State, experienced severe flooding due to torrential rainfall, resulting in the submersion of several houses and rendering many residents homeless. The flood has been described by residents as one of the worst in recent years, causing significant property damage and displacing families.

Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia visited the affected area and sent a high-powered delegation, led by Hon. Chief Solomon Iorpev, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, to assess the damage. The assessment revealed that many affected houses were illegally built on natural waterways, obstructing water flow.

The government announced plans to demolish these illegal structures to facilitate drainage improvements. Ongoing road construction aims to enhance stormwater management, with standard gutters being installed to direct water to the River Benue.

The government also committed to compensating landlords affected by the demolition of illegal buildings while warning against future unauthorized constructions.
