128 Boxers Compete for 10 Spots in Commonwealth Trials

The Nigeria Boxing Federation is conducting trials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with 128 boxers vying for 10 slots on the national team. The competition includes 101 men and 27 women, featuring four diaspora boxers.

Initially, the trials were set to select three male and three female boxers, but following a visit from Bukonla Olopade, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, the number was increased to five male and five female boxers. Vivian Azimen, the Secretary General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, emphasized the importance of these trials in providing equal opportunities for all boxers and noted that including diaspora athletes would enhance competitiveness.

The trials commenced on Tuesday with preliminary bouts and will culminate in finals scheduled for Friday, featuring contests across ten weight categories for both men and women. The Commonwealth Games will take place from July 24 to August 1, 2026, in Glasgow, Scotland.
