IFAB Approves New Red Card Rules for 2026 World Cup

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has unanimously approved two new rule changes that will be enforced during the FIFA World Cup 2026. These rules allow for players to be sent off with a red card if they walk off the pitch to protest or cover their mouths during confrontations.

The decision was made during a special meeting held in Vancouver, Canada, following FIFA's extensive consultations with key stakeholders. The new provisions come in response to a chaotic incident during the Africa Cup of Nations final in January, where Senegal's head coach Pape Thiaw ordered players off the field to protest a referee's decision, resulting in a 3-0 victory awarded to Morocco after the match was abandoned.

Additionally, the IFAB noted that the new rules aim to address growing concerns about players concealing potentially discriminatory remarks from officials. The amendments were discussed during IFAB's 140th annual general meeting in Hensol, Wales, in February.
