FIFA Implements Yellow Card Amnesty for 2026 World Cup

FIFA has introduced a yellow card amnesty for the 2026 World Cup group stage, which will allow players to accumulate two yellow cards without facing suspension until the knockout phase. This decision was revealed by FIFA's governing body, led by Gianni Infantino, and aims to ensure that fewer players miss important matches in the knockout rounds due to suspensions.

The rule change reflects the expanded tournament format, which will feature 48 nations. The amnesty will apply to yellow cards received during the group stage, with the first yellow card being canceled after the quarter-finals.

This amendment to the regulations was confirmed by the FIFA Council and is a significant change since the last amnesty was introduced during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Notably, the rule change is partly inspired by past incidents, such as Michael Ballack missing the 2002 World Cup final due to yellow card accumulation.

The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
