Atiku Abubakar Promises Direct Local Government Funding

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, announced his commitment to direct payment of funds to Nigeria's local governments immediately after his inauguration as President. This pledge was made in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, on Tuesday.

Atiku emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring constitutional independence for local governments. He referenced a Supreme Court judgment from July 2024 regarding the financial autonomy of local governments, accusing President Bola Tinubu's administration of neglecting to enforce this ruling.

Atiku claimed this inaction was to avoid conflict with state governors who previously controlled local government funds. He stated that his administration would respect court judgments, protect local government autonomy, and ensure public funds reach the intended recipients.

Atiku also alleged that the Tinubu administration's approach was politically motivated, aimed at securing support from state governors ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He criticized the current situation, stating, “This is not the Nigeria we should accept.”.
