Dickson Urges End to Political Violence Ahead of 2027 Elections

Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, the National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for an immediate cessation of violence against opposition political parties in Nigeria as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. He made this statement while welcoming former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, into the NDC.

Dickson condemned reported attacks on opposition parties in states like Benue and Enugu, urging security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible. He referenced President Bola Tinubu's call for an end to political violence, insisting it must be accompanied by concrete actions and consequences for perpetrators.

Recent incidents included disruptions of NDC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) meetings in Enugu, resulting in injuries and property damage. The NDC has petitioned security agencies for investigations into these attacks.

Dickson also mentioned the arrest of 46 suspects related to a confrontation involving NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi in Benue, advocating for more support for a special police squad aimed at addressing political violence.
