NDC Urged to Protect Plateau Guber Candidate Akuns

The Middle Belt Young Political Stakeholders (MBYPS) called on Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, the national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), to intervene in the attempt to displace Da Jonathan Sunday Akuns, the party’s gubernatorial candidate for Plateau State. This call was made during a press conference in Abuja, where Gaius Shekwolo and Abdulllahi Iliya, President and Secretary of MBYPS, respectively, expressed concerns over a planned repeat primary election on September 15, 2027.

They argued that this move was unwarranted as Akuns was the original sole aspirant, having emerged unopposed in the initial primary held on May 29, 2026. The group alleged that influential political figures in Plateau State were attempting to manipulate the electoral process, which could lead to disqualification in the upcoming February 2027 governorship election.

They emphasized the need for the NDC to uphold the rule of law and avoid electoral manipulation, warning against the potential for judicial intervention due to breaches of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s guidelines.
