Bishop Idowu-Fearon Warns Religious Leaders on Elections

As the 2027 general elections approach, Bishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon, former Chairman of the Kaduna State Peace Commission and founder of the Kaduna Centre for the Study of Christian-Muslim Relations, warned religious leaders against endorsing political candidates. He advised that instead of directing followers to vote for specific individuals, religious leaders should educate them on how to assess candidates and hold elected officials accountable.

Idowu-Fearon stated that political endorsements could undermine the moral authority of religious leaders, urging them to promote debates on candidates' records and policies. He emphasized that voters should make independent choices and be responsible for their votes.

The bishop also highlighted the need for leaders who genuinely practice their faith, regardless of religious identity, and cautioned against religious leaders becoming too close to politicians, as this could compromise their independence and ability to challenge wrongdoing.
