Defence Minister Introduces Election Security Framework

On Tuesday, at the 8th edition of the Blueprint Newspapers Public Lecture, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), Nigeria's Minister of Defence, unveiled a six-point framework designed to enhance election security for the 2027 general elections. Represented by Major General Olufemi Akinjobi (retd.), his Special Adviser on Policy and Research, Musa emphasized the evolving nature of security threats, which now extend beyond traditional methods to include cyber threats and misinformation.

He stated that election security should be viewed as the protection of democratic legitimacy rather than merely safeguarding polling stations. Musa proposed the "SECURE Framework," which includes Strategic Intelligence Integration, Electoral Cyber Resilience, Civil-Military Coordination, Unified Strategic Communication, a Responsible Information Environment, and Engaged Citizens.

He stressed the importance of proactive security measures, requiring months of planning and inter-agency collaboration, rather than last-minute deployments. Musa also highlighted the need for protecting electoral systems from cyber intrusions and ensuring that the constitutional roles of security agencies are respected.
