Cyber Attacks Threaten Nigeria's Election Integrity, Says Minister

General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), the Minister of Defence, addressed the evolving nature of security threats to Nigeria's elections, stating that cyber attacks are now the greatest threat to election integrity. Speaking at the 8th edition of Blueprint Newspapers public lecture on "Security Challenges and Integrity of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections," Musa, represented by Major General Olufemi Akinjobi, emphasized that threats have shifted from physical to cyberspace.

He noted that anonymous actors can manipulate information and exploit social divisions, undermining public confidence in democratic institutions. Musa highlighted the importance of extending election security beyond physical protection to include cyber resilience and strategic communication.

He acknowledged Nigeria's progress in defending democracy since 1999, citing the 2023 General Elections as a demonstration of both achievements and areas needing improvement. Musa pointed out that while there were isolated incidents during the elections, millions of Nigerians participated peacefully, showcasing the resilience of Nigeria's democratic institutions.
