Defence Minister Calls for Early Planning for 2027 Elections

On Tuesday, at the 8th edition of the Blueprint Newspapers Public Lecture, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), Nigeria's Minister of Defence, called for early planning and intelligence-led operations to secure the upcoming 2027 general elections. Represented by his Special Adviser on Policy and Research, Major General Olufemi Akinjobi (retd.), Musa spoke at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, emphasizing that effective election security requires months of preparation rather than last-minute deployments.

He stated that safeguarding democratic legitimacy involves more than just protecting polling stations; it requires building citizens' confidence in the electoral process. Musa highlighted contemporary security threats, which often transcend conventional warfare, manifesting through cyberspace and misinformation.

He stressed the need for security agencies to adapt to these evolving threats as stakeholders prepare for the elections, which are expected to be influenced significantly by security considerations.
