Benue Youths Block Peter Obi from Visiting Yelewata

On a visit to Benue State on June 13, 2025, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), was prevented by some youths from accessing Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area. Obi intended to make personal donations to victims of a massacre that occurred in the area.

Upon his arrival in Makurdi, he was met with hostility as youths blocked the Makurdi-Gboko Road, chanting “Obi go back” and reportedly wielding sticks and throwing stones. Security personnel were present but did not intervene.

Following the confrontation, Obi and his team returned to the airport and left the state. He expressed his concerns about the incident, stating it was ridiculous and worrisome, emphasizing his intention to sympathize with families affected by the killings of over 270 persons in Yelewata.

Obi appealed to security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, to ensure that political campaigns are conducted peacefully.
