Obi's Benue Visit Disrupted by Youths, Government Denies Role

On Tuesday, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, faced disruption during his planned visit to Yelwata, Benue State, where he intended to condole with families of victims of a massacre that occurred between June 13 and June 14, 2025. Youths barricaded a major road in Makurdi, preventing his convoy from proceeding.

Obi accused suspected hired thugs, allegedly acting on the orders of a government aide, of blocking his movement. The Benue State Government denied any involvement, asserting that Obi did not follow the necessary protocol for notifying them of his visit and accused him of trying to create political controversy.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed awareness of Obi’s visit and had deployed officers for security, but they were investigating the blockade. The incident caused significant traffic disruption and forced Obi to return to Jos, Plateau State.

Obi described the blockade as unacceptable, emphasizing the humanitarian nature of his visit.
